Devekund Waterfall

Hello readers. I hope you all are well.

This blog is about a most awaited trek in Pune. Most awaited because the destination is very beautiful. It is a plunge waterfall with a massive amount of water. Name of this jewel is Devkund. Devkund waterfall is a little place situated deep inside the forest surrounding Bhira dam. There is a hydroelectric power generation unit by Tata power at Bhira. This place was less known and has come into limelight due to this waterfall present deep inside the forest.

There is no history associated with it, locals believe that once upon a time utensils used to emerge from the kund whenever there was any ceremony happening in the local village. Also, Kundalika river originates at Devkund.

Trek starts from Bhira village. You can go by your vehicle till Bhira village. Trail start from an open parking area. Me and my two friends joined a trekking group and went by bus till Bhira village. You can go on your own also. It takes approx 2-3 hrs to reach the village. The route to the village is normal route, but once you enter the district, you will find yourself on the route, surrounded by the trees and mountains and as you go closer, you may encounter many beautiful waterfalls, mountains hiding into the fog. During the monsoon, route is full of many small waterfalls. you can stop and enjoy in these waterfalls. Actually these waterfall and natural beauty is the specialty of Pune and nearby areas. During the last few mins of this route, you actually go alongside a mountain and you can see few big waterfalls flowing down through the top of the mountains. This view is very beautiful and eye-catching. We reached the village at around 10 a.m.

Here are some picture of this route:

We had breakfast there and then we started the trek. Path is very obvious with the direction boards. Total time it should take approx 1.5-2 hrs. It is mandatory to get a local guide with you. First 30-45 mins, trail is alongside the Bhira dam reservoir. One can stay here for overnight camping also; it is a beautiful location with the eye catching views. From here the trail goes to forest, and most of the trek is inside the forest now, but the whole trail is not the same. Once you enter the forest, Trail starts the climbing. Though it is not very steep, a good energy is required and a little care is needed as it’s a dense forest. So trail is the mixture of such climbing patches and some rocky ground.

Here are some pictures that I clicked during the trek:

Overall trek takes approx 1.5 hr to 2 hrs to reach the waterfall. It’s a simple trek but first timers may find it difficult as we have to cross some streams and have to climb some rocks. And during the monsoons, the trail may become slippery and streams may have the heavier flow that will make it difficult to cross.

Here are some pictures of this amazing destination:

Locals have marked a line of control bisecting the pond and going beyond that line is not allowed as the depth over there is around 60 feet. You can swim in the first half of this bisection. After monsoon is the best time period to go. As during the monsoon, this place is closed. And before monsoon, you may not find the sufficient water there. Bhira village is the last village where you can have tea or lunch. You won’t get anything to eat after that village.
